This is a photo I took on my iPhone. I took it while walking to my friends house through their estate. Between the bicycle sheds was an open space and neatly set up, were these two objects. I couldn’t have made a better photo set-up if I tried! I discussed this with my tutor Damien yesterday. He talked about how without the hoover the photograph is something completely different. The chair on its own would make the photo look like some sort of stage set up awaiting its actor. It would become a more sombre and lonely photo and yet the addition of the Hoover brings in a comical element to the photo. Neatly laid beside each other they give hints of human life. While most likely left out as rubbish it is completely odd to see them placed in such clean and tidy environment.
My only problem with this photo is its quality. I took it with my iPhone and not with my proper camera. This has been an issue for me in the past. But I am beginning to realise, the most important camera you will ever own is the one you will always have on you. The iPhone and all other video phones have allowed us to capture transient moments we would never have dreamed of catching 10 years ago. I immediately think of all those youtube videos of fights/events/accidents captured in a split second by someone sitting on the tube. Whether these kind of moments captured is a good thing or not is up for debate but I am fascinated by this new ability we have. Moments otherwise lost to the back of our memory, that they can be potentially changed and manipulated, now are kept real and present. They are like a safety bank for our memories. But more importantly they are shared. More and more people are upload these incidents and chance moments on the internet. Allowing for heroes and ‘internet sensations’ to be created!
Anyone ever heard of Snackman?
